Our clients’ business interests span the globe and so do their disputes. Our team represents clients in all aspects of mitigating and resolving international disputes that arise inside or outside the United States. Cozen O’Connor’s international arbitration lawyers are experienced at representing parties in arbitrations around the world, as well as in ancillary proceedings before courts in the United States to compel arbitration, obtain anti-suit injunctions, and enforce or set aside arbitration awards. We serve our clients from several U.S. commercial hubs including New York; Washington, DC; Los Angeles; Miami; Boston; and Chicago.
Cozen O’Connor’s international arbitration team includes attorneys who are fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and have experience with disputes arising under both common law and civil law. Our familiarity with foreign languages and cultures enhances our ability to sort through multi-party and multi-jurisdictional conflicts as well as advise clients about how to internationalize their businesses with a proactive dispute resolution management strategy.
We assist clients at every stage of the dispute resolution process. We advise on crafting dispute resolution clauses and help clients make wise preemptive decisions about the procedure, forum, and language for potential arbitrations. We also advise on alternative dispute resolution methods, such as dispute boards and mediation, and provide guidance on the best dispute resolution options in any given situation.
When conflicts do occur, we advocate for clients in front of both international commercial and investor-state arbitral tribunals through the enforcement of arbitral awards. We have experience arbitrating complex disputes under many different rules and administrative bodies, including the following:
-
American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA/ICDR)
-
JAMS
-
International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)
-
London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA)
-
United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL)
-
International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)
-
German Institution of Arbitration (DIS)
-
Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC)
We have also represented parties to ad hoc arbitrations. We are actively involved in the enforcement and collection of arbitral awards in the United States and abroad.
Our lawyers regularly sit as an arbitrator in domestic and international arbitrations and are part of the AAA/ICDR panel of arbitrators, the CPR Distinguished panel of neutrals, the LCIA panel of arbitrators, and other rosters. Evincing their high standing in the international arbitration community, several of our attorneys are fellows of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Cozen O’Connor’s team has arbitrated throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia, and we have handled matters with interested parties in the Middle East, Africa and Australia as well. Our attorneys serve clients in a range of business sectors, including energy (oil, gas, and electricity), construction and mechanical engineering, finance, transportation and logistics, insurance, international investment, chemicals, technology, and mining.
Clients come to us with their most complex and high-stakes matters. Our team provides needed guidance and trusted counsel on coordinating, managing, and supervising multijurisdictional civil and criminal parallel proceedings. We have also won large-value awards for our clients and achieved victory in disputes that implicated core principles and practices of international business operations.
We also have access and close ties to a vast network of practitioners, many of whom are members and leaders of international associations such as the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, and the New York City and State Bar Associations.
